Published between 1986 and 2004, the twenty seven articles collected in this work are here organized under four headings : methodology; society and economy; mentalities; prosopography ; with an important prosopographical index (over 40 pages). It includes an introduction on Byzantine sigillography and its iconographic aspects, remarks on the cult of the relics and the saints, the role of women, the management of the public goods or the provisioning of Constantinople, after the seals, as well as articles dedicated to large Byzantine families, over several generations, after the information provided by their seals.
