The fifteen articles brought together in this volume (ten in French and five in English) were published between 1995 and 2024. Their subjects are varied, as are the sources they set out to examine. In one way or another, they all contribute to our knowledge of the prosopography of the Senate of Constantinople in the protobyzantine period (4th–7th centuries).
The first two articles examine developments in onomastics, and especially polyonymy—the accumulation of names by which certain senators commemorated their kinship ties, paid tribute to their benefactors and patrons, or attested to their Christian devotion. These are followed by two contributions to the prosopography of the praetorian prefects of the East, one dealing with their social origins, the other with their religious affiliation. Finally, a series of articles investigates various aspects of the careers of several individuals, including key figures in the political, diplomatic, and military history of the fifth and sixth centuries, such as the generals Aspar, Belisarius, and Vitalian, or the magistri officiorum Hermogenes and Peter the Patrician.
